Edition: MOSS 2007 Standard Edition + SP2 I have a site collection where most of the users have read-only access. My issue is the profiles of these users are not getting synchronized with AD. If users first name, last name and or email address changes, it will not reflect in site collection user profile. I have read some articles about user profiles. It says site collection level user profile will be marked inactive if they don't add any content over some duration. And the profiles marked inactive will not be changed during synchronization process. The workaround would be deleting and adding back the user from site collection user profile list. This workaround works but if these changes are more then it would be difficult accomplish. Is there any alternative workaround for this issue?

First, what you are talking about is synchronization of user profile information with the userInfo table. The userinfo table is what WSS uses to store userinformation like display name since it doesn't have user profiles. For general display of names in SharePoint it defaults to the userinfo table since that is present in both WSS and MOSS. Second, users are not marked as inactive after a period of time. If the user gets their permissions by way of group membership, instead of actually being added to the site, then they have no entry in the userinfo table until they log in for the first time. At that point they are created in the userInfo table as an inactive user. They remain inactive until they "Contribute" by adding a list item, uploading a document, or modifying an item. Inactive users are ignored when user profile information is synced with the userinfo table. The best workaround is to simply have the user log in and change some list entry like an announcement. I would create one list where the users have "contribute" access for this purpose. Other than that there is no workaround. Deleting and adding the user back will create a user where the user profile fields are currently synced, but the user will still be inactive and not synced in the future.
