Upgrading from SQL 2008 to SQL 2008 R2
Do I also have to use the Preinst /stopsite command when upgrading from SCCM 2007 SP2 to R2?

No you only have to use that when you want to stop all services. That's not required when installing R2 or R3Kent Agerlund | My blogs: http://blog.coretech.dk/author/kea/ and http://scug.dk/ | Twitter @Agerlund | Linkedin: /kentagerlund

Also, don't think of R2 as an upgrade. It merely enables features already installed in SP1 (and SP2).Jason | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jsandys | http://blogs.catapultsystems.com/jsandys/default.aspx | Twitter @JasonSandys

I need to upgrade my SQL 2008 install on my SCCM 2007 SP2 server to SQL 2008 R2. I know SCCM 2007 SP2 supports SQL 2008 R2 but I am wondering if there is any particular procedure that I need to follow when upgrading SQL or can I just run the SQL 2008 R2 installing and perform the upgrade? On this site: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb632817.aspx it says you need to: "Use the hierarchy maintenance tool (Preinst.exe) to stop all Configuration Manager services by using the Preinst /stopsite command" Is this required? I found that link on this page http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee344146.aspx about 3/4 the way down under: Upgrading SQL Server on the site database server

Yes, per the documentation. Note that the second link you posted actually refers to the first link under the section you called out.Jason | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jsandys | http://blogs.catapultsystems.com/jsandys/default.aspx | Twitter @JasonSandys
