Upgrading/Migrating Site Server OS Pointers

We have a primary site running Server 2008 R2 and would like to upgrade it to 2012 R2. I know a direct in place upgrade is not supported and we need a new server. What I am looking for is some real world advice on how to do this. Some background on our environment:

  • We have large data volumes on this site off the system volume which house source files and the SCCMContentLib.
  • We do not use the Site Backup maintenance task.

Do we need to do a site recovery (which would necessitate the Site Backup maintenance task) or can we recover using just SQL backup? This process seems very like it is very hazily documented, so I am unsure of even where to start.

You have to restore ConfigMgr on the new hardware. A SQL backup is sufficient.

What about all the SMS* folders and WSUS folder? How are those files migrated to the new box?
