Upgrade from WSS3.0 to MOSS 2007 fails installing sample data.
I have been running WSS3.0 for a bit of time- and wanted to upgrade to MOSS 2007. I installed MOSS 2007 W/SP1. At the end of this process the install failed. I re-ran the install as a "Repair" and it said it was complete and to run the configuration wizard. I ran the configuration wizard- and it went smoothly until it his the point it was trying to install sample data. Researching online I discovered the "psconfig -cmd upgrade -force -inplace b2b" command., Which I ran. it completed successfully. I then went to the Central administration site and was met with: An unexpected error has occurred. I decided to re-run the configuration wizzard and had a problem at the same point. The appropriate portion of the log is below. It is basically telling me the virtual web site is already being used. Which it is, because it's an upgrade. At no point am I given an option to "choose a different root directory". How can I get this upgrade to complete? 05/12/2010 17:16:02 12 INF Calling SPGlobalAdmin.ExtendVirtualServer() 05/12/2010 17:16:02 12 ERR Task evalprovision has failed with an unknown exception 05/12/2010 17:16:02 12 ERR Exception: System.ArgumentException: The directory C:\inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirectories\80dca2e9f9-6e31-4c79-a5dc-34736db16bcf is already being used by another IIS Web Site. I have followed instruction in the KB article and this has not solved the problem. I should note that the error listed in the KB does not match the error I am getting. The directory C:\inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirectories\80dca2e9f9-6e31-4c79-a5dc-34736db16bcf is already being used by another IIS Web Site. Choose a different root directory for your new Web application. That path is the virtual directory root of the WSS 3.0 install- so it is being used already by "another" IIS Web site..... the one I am trying to get it to upgrade. Hal

Rock, All of my port 80 sites have host headers. The only sites without host headers are the ones that were created by sharepoint (IE: sharepoint admin, Office web services) but they do not run on port 80. Keep in mind- there *IS* a site there in that directory, the WSS 3.0 site is there - I am truying to upgrade it. The problem SEEMS to be is it's trying to install demos on top of my existing WSS3.0 site.... 05/17/2010 15:20:31 6 ERR Failed to create sample data. An exception of type System.ArgumentException was thrown. Choose a different root directory for your new Web application. Thanks! Hal
