Upgrade content database without Service application upgrade

Hi

I am in a process of upgrading content database but not any of those service applications. Can I provision new SharePoint 2013 services and associate with my upgraded content database? I know User profile services, search services, excel services were extensively used in SP 2010 but its all standard configuration and I believe the new services should support the content database upgrade upgrade in SP 2013, Is this correct? Are their any known/compatibility issues if I do not upgrade service applications?

Many thanks

Shri

Hi Shri,

When upgrading SharePoint 2010 to SharePoint 2013, the upgrade process uses database attach upgrade method.

For upgrading a service application, you need to create a new service application in SharePoint 2013, then associate it to the upgrade content database.

The following service applications have databases that can be upgraded when you upgrade from SharePoint Server 2010 to SharePoint Server 2013:
Business Data Connectivity service application
Managed Metadata service application
PerformancePoint Services service application
Search service application
Secure Store Service application
User Profile service application

If you don't upgrade service applications, some customizations in the SharePoint 2010 service applications will does not exists, you need to create them manually in SharePoint 2013 service application.

More information about upgrading service applications, you can refer to:

Thank you Wendy. Since all service application has a standard configuration and I can recreate it. My concern was if I upgrade content database that resides in the 14 hierarchies(prior to upgrade site collection 15 folders), the new services provisioned in 2013 can be activated/consumed in 14 hierarchies site collection or not.

Hi ShriG,

In SharePoint 2013, it also contains 14 folder, you can create a site collection using 2010 UI and some service applications are same with the ones in SharePoint 2010.

In addition, if your service applications in SharePoint 2010 don't have extra or complex configurations, I suggest you just recreate it in SharePoint 2013 instead of upgrading content database to SharePoint 2013.

There are some aritlces, they may be help you:
