Upgrade SCCM 2012 R2 to SCCM 2012 R2 SP1
Hi,

In our SCCM Infrastructure, we have 1-Central Administration Site server, 3-Primary Site Servers, 3-Secondary servers with SCCM 2012 R2 installed in it. Now our requirement is to upgrade the version from SCCM 2012 R2 to SCCM 2012 R2 SP1

Since we have multi-tiered architecture, would like to know the detailed procedure of how to perform the upgrade process. Also need to know
1) What are the Pre-requistes to be done before upgrade
2) Steps to upgrade Site servers (CAS/Primary)
3) What steps to be taken to upgrade SCCM Clients to have R2 SP1

Appreciate your help on this

Thanks in Advance

#1: make sure that all requirements are met (OS and SQL versions etc) and that there is a valid backup available and test the database upgrade on a copy of the db.
#2: upgrade top down = start with the CAS. Make sure that replication is up and running again before proceeding to the next site.
#3: the installation of the service pack creates packages that can be used to upgrade clients, or use SCUP, or upgrade to R2SP1CU1 and use auto client upgrade.

Hi,

Thanks for the quick response. Will follow as per the link

In my SCCM Infrastructure, I don't have database replica enabled for Management Point and Database Replication (as I don't see anything under Local Publications and Local Subscriptions)

So will only take backup of CAS DB and run Testdbupgrade and once test is successful will start upgrade in CAS.

Please clarify my below ask:

1) While upgrading CAS should I do any thing in the Primary Site servers or should I leave all Primary sites "AS IT IS"?

2) Once CAS is upgraded to SCCM R2 SP1, should I start upgrading all the Primary Sites One by One? Is there any other specific check need to be done before starting Upgrade in the Primary servers?

3) Should I need to take backup of Primary Site servers DB and run Testdbupgrade before actual start of upgrade in Primary servers?

Thanks & Regards

Krishna

/testdbupgrade should be run on every database to be upgraded. This has to be performed on a copy (!) of the database!

#1:don't touch the primaries while upgrading the CAS, IOW don't touch other sites while one is being upgraded.

#2: /testdbupgrade for each. Prereq checker will be run automatically.

#3: yes, see above.

Hi Torsten,

Is there anyway to upgrade multiple Primary sites safely at the same time?

I have 4 environments to upgrade, each with a CAS and up to 13 Primaries.

Current method is to do the CAS first then, each Primary one by one but this is going to take sometime....

I have heard on the grapevine MS has tested doing 2 or even up to 5 primaries at once, but restore is a real pain if replication issues arise..... Can you provide any insight?

Thank you in advance.

13 primaries? What's the reason for having some many?
I haven't seen any official documentation about upgrading multiple primaries at once, so you should ask Microsoft if that's supported at all.
