Updating MOSS 2007, why the WSS 3.0 updates?
I found this article - Deploying Sharepoint updates (rather lengthy too!)http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc263467.aspxIn it there's the following: Recommended installation sequence for updates Microsoft enforces the installation order of service packs, but does not enforce the installation order of packages or patches. You can install packages or patches in any order you want, so long as every server in your farm is updated to the same level when you are done. In addition, there is no requirement to install an update unless your servers are affected by the problem described in the KB article for the update. Although Microsoft does not enforce the update installation sequence, we recommend that you install the post-RTM updates for Office SharePoint Server that you require in the following sequence: Service Pack 2 for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (KB 953338) Service Pack 2 for Office SharePoint Server 2007 (KB 953334) The April CU for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (KB 968850) The April CU for Office SharePoint Server 2007 (KB 968851) Does this mean, that even though I'm running MOSS 2007 that I still install the updates for Windows SharePoint Serfvices 3.0?

Yes it doesWSS 3.0 and MOSS is 2 different products, understanding that will help you understand the rest.WSS is 1 product that offers the core, its a framework if you want, then theirs a package called MOSS which is a product that is based on the WSS frameworkif you want to update your product that has a dependency, well you need to update that dependency as well.I dont know if i am expressing myself clearly, i hope i am :)WSS 3.0 = Core ProductMOSS = A Product that calls a lot of the things that are in WSS, the Coreso if you your MOSS application is updated to call certain items, well the Core has to understand what he is saying so we update the 2 in a specific order pereferably.Of course theirs a lot more detail than that... but in a couple of lines, i hope it helps you :)Benjamin Niaulin

Hi Benjamin,Thanks for the reply. Sort of makes sense, but since I didn't have WSS 3.0 installed in the first place, just MOSS 2007 I sort of figured that the two products were separate I would have thought they had their own distinctive update forks. So I guess I'll be doing it in the order they are suggesting.

actually you do have WSS, by installing MOSS it first installed WSS and followed with installation of MOSS :Pit just didnt tell you but if you go in your Central Administration for example, you will find "services running on server" you will find Windows Sharepoint Services services, like the search (which becomes the help when you have moss)Enjoy Sharepoint :) You will Love itBenjamin Niaulin

Thanks! I have been with Sharepoint for a little over two years, and it's just way too much stuff to learn. It's like throwing a kid in a candy store and tell 'em to report back on every piece of candy that was tried then learning how to better utilize those flavors; like which makes a better desert candy, dinner candy, snack and such and various combinations. Then tell them that they can make their own candy by calling various APIs (Another Piquant Intermix) and using the SDKK (Special Deliscious Kandy Kit). Zyikes! I got to love those after dinner BDC mints. hee.

The key thing to note is that there are two different WSS 3.0's. There is the product WSS 3.0 which you can download and install. Then there is the technology WSS 3.0. ----------- When you install WSS 3.0 the product you install the technology WSS 3.0 and then there is additional software which uses (almost only) the technology in order to create the web site etc. Similarly when you install MOSS 2007 you install the WSS 3.0 *technology* and then (a lot more) additional software which (among other things) uses the technology in order to create the web site etc. etc. ----------- Once that is clear it becomes understandable that in order to update a MOSS installation you need to run the WSS 3.0 (updates the underlying technology) and the MOSS 2007 service packs (updates all the extra bits). Now it would have been simpler, given that there is only a single MOSS installation and not an installation of WSS 3.0 the product followed by a MOSS 2007 bits installation, if Microsoft took the trouble to bundle the WSS 3.0 and the MOSS 2007 Service Packs into one "MOSS 2007 SP" which contained both. Both they don't (it would mean a delay in release no doubt) so we users have to put up with the seemingly illogical need to update first WSS 3.0 (the technology) and then MOSS 2007. ------------ As an irrelevant side note, I tried during the beta in vain to propose that the WSS 3.0 *product* should be called something like "SharePoint 2007 Express" in order to get two different names for the technology (still WSS 3.0) and the product. It didn't go through.
