Unused NICS showing errors in SCOM
Hey folks, I've got a few servers that have quad port NICS installed, (or just dual port NICS). Some of the ports are unused. SCOM is flagging these as errors and giving me the big 'red x' for the over all health of these servers. The NICs are not configured with IP's and I've tried disabling them in Windows. SCOM however is still showing errors for them. I'm annoyed because our admins at first glance always see a red x on the health and have to drill down to find out there is nothing wrong with the server except that these NICs arent used. Why is SCOM doing this and how can I fix it. I'm quite annoyed. To make things worse I have other servers that have unused NICs that DO NOT generate these errors in SCOM. What's that all about? Management packs are all up to date, server are all fully patched with the latest drivers for all the NICs. Help?

It really depends on the hardware management packs in question, so my first question is what Hardware MPs are you running and what versions are they? What hardware is generating the alert, can you paste a samle of the alert in a response? what hardware is not generating the alert? Could be different hardware vendors but I'm not sure. I'm sure this can be addressed just need more information.Scott Moss MVP (Operations Manager) | President - System Center Virtual Users Group | Vice President - Atlanta Southeast Management Users Group (ATL SMUG) Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you!

its all Dell HW (Poweredge 2950's and 1950's) Using the Dell HW MP that Microsoft provides that's partnered with Dell. Latest version on their website as of last week. Will post an error of the message when I can, currently that hardware is physically making its way to a new rack.

Dell provides this management pack - Microsoft does not provide it. Just a clarification. You should bring your query to Dell support.Microsoft Corporation

By default when the Network cards are enabled and it takes the IP from 169.247 range, it gets register in SCOM and even if you disable the cards it will not update. You can try to delete the unwanted entries from registry under HKLM/SYSTEM/Current controlset/Services/TCPIP/parameters/interfaces. After you delete the entries for the disabled network cards try to re-discover the effected servers in SCOM console.

I think i have uninstalled the SCOM agent and re-installed (after disabling the nics) and all is sweet. Cheers, John Bradshaw
