Hello,

I am using SCCM 2012 R2 to image devices.  I have a challenge to image a new computer which has not been connected to the domain. The task sequence finished with attached error.  Before I image the device, I imported the MAC address and associated the MAC address to the deviceID D164707 by following the link: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/Bb633291.aspx.  Yet, after TS completed, I see two devices in SCCM.  One has the MAC address which I believe it was injected by me.  The other has no MAC address.  One has IP address attached but it is not the same IP from the ipconfig.  Attached partial smsts.log shows unknown host (gethostbyname failed) and sending with winhttp failed: 80072ee7 errors.  It appears the hardcode MAC address is not registered to the device ID.  Does anyone have any idea?  Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,

If the device already exists in the AD for example, that second object could be created during the AD discoveries. About your error message, and based on the small log snippet, that error is often caused by network related issue. Either the device is not having an IP, or it can't connect to things like DNS for name resolving.

I should have mentioned this device does not have an onboard NIC.  I am using an USB-RJ45 adapter come with the device.  This adapter has a MAC address which I injected into the device in SCCM.

The procedure that I followed was:

Deleted the device name in AD.

Performed CLEAN disk on the device.

Deleted device ID in SCCM.

Imported the MAC address with device ID D164707 in the Device collection then associate the device to All computers.

Perform TS imaging.  Imaging finished with errors in smsts.log.

Are these the right steps?  Did I miss anything that I should have done?

Thanks,

Does the device get an IP address when it boots in WinPE?

Yes.

And can you resolve the site server FQDN, which is mentioned in the log files, from that device?

Did you mean the SCCM03.Domain.com Server?  I could try to ping it while imaging after pressing F8 then bring up a CMD.exe.  I will do that on Monday.

Am I supposed to import the MAC address of the adapter to SCCM by giving the device ID match D164707?  I imported it then associated it with All Computer System. When I do that, I received No Task Sequence error until I remove the imported device. Since it appears the adapter did not get a IP address, I was wondering to attach the MAC address of the adapter to the device and hope Task Sequence can find it after reboot. It does not seems to work for me by attaching a MAC address to a device in SCCM...

Thanks again!

Depends. When you deployed the task sequence to the unknown computers collection, you should not import the device. When you deployed the task sequence to a custom collection, you need to import the device and add it to the custom collection.

Can I import the MAC address of the device that is already exists in SCCM?

By the way, I took a screen shot of the Task Sequence during imaging.  Notice the IP address is shown at the right lower corner.

If there is already an object within ConfigMgr, with the same MAC address, don't import it again, but simply move the object to the collection that you want it.
