Unexpected error when importing into MOSS from a spreadsheet
I am trying to import a spreadsheet into MOSS, but keep getting and "An unexpected error has occurred. Your table cannot be published." I get a message "Contacting the server for information" for a few (quite a few) seconds and then the error is returned. The list is in fact created and the columns exist in the list, but no data is imported. However this only seems to happen when I go past column AM, if I import for example A1:AM26 then the import is sucessful. But if I try A1:AN26 I receive the error. Both AM & AN are formatted the same and contain similar data (text). The spreadsheet is Excel 2007Is there a practical limit on the number of columns that can be imported??ThanksJim

Him Jim,Have you look at this article.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923591Quotes from the link above: WORKAROUND To work around this issue, use one of the following procedures: Use less than 231 columns when you create a list from data in an Excel 2007 workbook. Use less than 232 columns when you create a list from data in an Access 2007 database.Sri

Thanks for the response SriHowever I am getting the error when only importing around 50 columns. What is happening is that the table with all the columns are created, but no data is imported. However, once the table is created I can go into datasheet view and cut-and-paste the data in from the Excel spreadsheet. So it's a workaround, but it works.Jim

We ran into this on Sharepoint 2010, exporting from Excel 2010 using these steps: Open the Excel, and select all the relevant cells. From the Insert tab, use Insert Table to convert to tableClick the Export button in the Table tab and choose Export to Sharepoint The list would be created with only Title and Tags (a read-only column). It turned out that the Tags column was created by a third-party plugin (Newsgator Keywords) immediately after the list was created. That new column somehow interrupted or interfered with the creation of the rest of the columns. Since the rest of the columns were not created, the rows could not be inserted. That resulted in "An unexpected error has occurred. Your table cannot be published." We worked around this by disabling the feature in Site Settings - Features. Other third-party products or any code that runs at list creation could cause the same kind of interference.
