Unable to install SCCM 2007 R2 - Another installation is already in progress
I have a secondary site server hosted on a virtual server running Windows Server 2008 x64, virtualized by Hyper-V. I upgraded the SCCM site server to SP2 successfully, but when I went to upgrade to R2, I kept getting this error "Another installation is already in progress" I ran task manager, and noticed that there were two install services running, msiexec and msiexec *32 If I stop msiexec the entire installation quites. If I stop msiexec *32 the installer keeps running, but I still get the same error about another installation in progress. I have rebooted the machine, made sure it is fully patched, and checked that no other users are logged on. Any ideas?

Is there a ConfigMgr client on the machine? Is ConfigMgr installing something on the machine, look at the status messages and see what is going on. Just a shot in the dark. http://www.sccm-tools.com http://sms-hints-tricks.blogspot.com

SOLVED: When I checked the site server status in the console, I found this: MP Installation fails - MP Control Manager detected MPsetup has failed to create the CCM_Incoming Virtual Directory. It turns out, the site server keeps trying to run that installation, but it fails and then retries again every hour. I think that is the other installation that is in progress. I found a technet forum post that says “Make sure Protected Storage Service is started”, and it wasn’t. I started the service, waited a few minutes, then retried the R2 installation and it succeeded.
