Hi, Please cite the exact error message to us. If possible, please also check the event viewer and ULS log to find more details about this issue. Regarding the question about the prerequisites, here is the description from on-line document: To create a list based on a spreadsheet, you must be using a spreadsheet program that is compatible with Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services, Microsoft Internet Explorer, and Microsoft Windows. For example, you can import a list from Microsoft Office Excel 2007 that you created to store and manage contracts with vendors. For more information, please refer to: Create a list based on a spreadsheet http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepointtechnology/HA100992371033.aspx Hope it helps! Nice weekend! Here is the 403 Forbidden error. The website declined to show this webpage HTTP 403 Most likely causes: This website requires you to log in. What you can try: Go back to the previous page. More information This error (HTTP 403 Forbidden) means that Internet Explorer was able to connect to the website, but it does not have permission to view the webpage. For more information about HTTP errors, see Help. There is no event logs during the timeframe that the create list using a spreadsheet was attempted. I have tried a spreadsheet with a couple of columns and rows and it also failed with the same message.

Hi,I noticed you described the exact same problem that I just discovered. I believe it is related to my new install of Office 2007. I get the same 403 forbidden error that you received (same screen shot as shown). Did you ever find a solution to the problem?Dkrufrom Minnesota

This is a forum. If it's urgent, perhaps you should contact Microsoft support. In any case, I just tried the import spreadsheet (we were previously getting the same 403 Forbidden error), after bringing our servers up to date with SP1 and the Infrastructure update and voila, it's now working. Are your servers fully patched?

I recived the same error, at the time i had both office 2003 and 2007 installed for support reasons, after uninstalling 2003, and re-establishing 2007 as the default program for those files as well as doing the first load up configuration, my error changed to:"This list cannot be imported because a Windows Sharepoint Services-compatible spreadsheet application is not installed"so it is an office issue, i am going to try a repair install shortly, most likely some dll issue

Do you have any other 2003 products installed? I've seen those cause the same issue (like Project or Visio for instance).

It is now working. I re-installed 2 Office components that relate to SharePoint (Microsoft Office Access DatasheetComponent and Windows SharePoint Services Support)and the import now works. They were both visible in the installed options, but I re-installed them anyway. After restarting my pc, the import functionality started working.

**** I HAVE DEBUNKED THIS FOR ONE USER***Originally, when 1 user of 450 attempted to import an Office 2007 Excel document, Internet Explorer would just crash and disappear. We looked in Control Panel and found multiple versions of Office 2007 Standard, Office 2007 Professional, Office 2003 Professional, Office 2007 MS Project and Office 2007 Visio. We removed Office 2003 in Control Panel/Add Remove Programs. Next, we verified the components (Microsoft Office Access Datasheet Component and Windows SharePoint Services Support) were installed in the other Office packages. We did this by going into Control Panel/add remove programs, clicked on Change button next to Office 2007 standard and selected Add or Remove Features. We clicked on Office Tools, scrolled down to Windows SharePoint Services Support and verified that Microsoft Office Access Datasheet Component and Windows SharePoint Services Support components were installed. We rebooted and attempted to upload again, this time we got a different error, --> This list cannot be imported because a Windows Sharepoint Services-compatible spreadsheet application is not installed <--Since this was a new error, we decided to repair the Office 2007 professional and it worked. Note: To repair the Office 2007 Professional installation:- Start, Control Panel- add/remove programs- click the change button next to Office 2007 professional - Select the Repair radio button- 25 minutes later, you will be happy. As a Note of the note above instead of a superscript to this essay, the event viewer was showing office 1001 errors.
