Unable to connect to a SQL Server 6.5 database from SQL Server 2008
I'm unable to connect to a SQL Server 6.5 data base from a SQL Server SP2 Cum 3 via Reporting Services. I get the following error message: An error occurred during client rendering. An error has occurred during report processing. Cannot create a connection to data source 'KeyWest'. For more information about this error navigate to the report server on the local server machine, or enable remote errors I'm able to create a successful connection (OLE DB) from my desktop installation of SSRS 2008 and run the report but I cannot get the report to work from the server. Looking at this link http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms159219(v=SQL.100).aspx and comparing the 'Support Data Sources' sections between SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2 I have the suspision that R2 may support the 6.5 connection but not R1 from the server. I don't have a system to experiment with at the moment. I was hoping someone could verify this for me before I press my business case.

Hi JManAK, Before everything, I just want to let you know that all assisted support for SQL Server 6.5 already ended on March 31th, 2004. Let me give some background and additional information on which versions of SQL Server are currently supported and for how long. You can look up the various support lifecycles here: http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/search For SQL Server 6.5, please look at http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/search/default.aspx?sort=PN&alpha=SQL+Server+6.5&Filter=FilterNO And, I would suggest you upgrade the SQL Server 6.5 to a supported version as soon as possible. Moreover, I have read the article that you provided carefully, and noticed the follows, Data Sources Supported by Reporting Services - OLE DB for SQL Server http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms159219(v=SQL.100).aspx#OLEDBSQL It seems that we can use OLE DB extension to connect to and retrieve data from SQL Server 6.5 and earlier running on x86. As for the original issue, I think you may need to double check the connection string and make sure the SQL server name and its instance, the data source, the initial catalog are correctly configured. You may look at the articles below, Connecting to a Data Source (Reporting Services) http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms156450(v=SQL.100).aspx Creating Report Datasets for Other Data Sources http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms157132(v=SQL.100).aspx Thanks for the understanding.
