I just created a publishing sub-site and once I clicked the Publishing button, the ribbon disappeared and I am unable to edit, or check out the sub site. Are there settings that need to be set in order to allow this functionality for the ribbon to appear or is this unusual behavior?

I created a sub site of a Publishing site. When I did that, I had a ribbon and was able to get some text on the sub site. While unpublished, I could do check in and check out. There was a link that said "Only you can see this. Publish content" Once I clicked the Publish button, the ribbon disappeared. I thought that maybe the ribbon was hidden, so I took the cursor and hovered at the top to see if a ribbon would appear. Nothing. There is absolutely no way that I can see to edit this site. this is what it looks like..

I seemed to have answered my own question. I went to the cog and saw there that there is a hide/show ribbon selection from the drop down.
