URL redirect/rewrite or any other solution
Looking for the best answer, Question for experts We have a SP2010 web application that has almost 40 site collections, contoso.com/departments/dept1 contoso.com/departments/dept2 and so on each department has its own site collection, there are reasons to move from this web app to another web app, and keep the same URL, the move needs to be done by per sit collection not all at once due to the size and support. how can to move a site collection to another web app and keep the same URL taking into consecration that the Root will move first and also the need is to keep the root URL the same when moving to the other web app, there is a load balancer implemented sing CC any clue. Hi Ahmed, do you need to move all site collections to the new web application or just some of them? If you have to move all the sc you can create the new web application with a different host header (say contoso1.com), create the managed path "departments", backup the site collections from the old web app and then restore in contoso1.com. Once finished restoring all the site collections you can modify the alternate access mapping for the OLD web application in contoso2.com and for the NEW web application in contoso.com. You should also check the bindings in IIS on all your Web Servers. Before backing up the site collections I suggest to put a lock on them and remove it after the restore. Hi Ahmed, I found an article about how to use IIS URL Rewrite module with SharePoint that comes from a (great) Microsoft guy (Jie Li). http://blogs.msdn.com/b/opal/archive/2009/06/30/fix-sharepoint-302-redirect-problem-by-iis7-and-url-rewrite.aspx I also read that url rewriting is not supported programmatically. Hi Riccardo, No, the move needs to per done per site collection starting with the root then one by one, this is the challenge, and to keep the same URL for moved sites.Best Regards, Ammar MCT http://ahmed-ammar.blogspot.com Posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

Hi Ahmed, using powershell / stsadm you can backup/restore to move each site collection one by one. I'm not sure if using IIS URL Rewrite module allows to keep the same address for two web applications http://www.iis.net/downloads/microsoft/url-rewrite. Otherwise do you have a reverse proxy that you can use? Cheers RiccardoItalian SharePoint Community - My blog - My profile
