I would separate the two totally, might save you some pain in the future.
Check out Johan's hydration kit, its awesome. You can have it fully build a test lab while you sit back and relax :)

Just make sure your dev environment is not publishing to the AD and you should be fine. But its better that you install the second site in isolation with its own AD.
