Troubleshooting Refresh from XP to Windows 7 using USMT with Hardlinking
I followed the instructions in this article using its Method 1 (http://blogs.technet.com/b/configurationmgr/archive/2010/06/30/how-to-use-usmt-4-hardlinking-in-a-configuration-manager-2007-task-sequence.aspx), and during step 15, it says to do this: Click on the "Set Local State Location" task. Next to the "Value:" text field, change it from %_SMSTSUserStatePath% to %SystemDrive%\UserState. I wanted to try to follow this as well http://www.petervanderwoude.nl/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/HardLinkTS.jpg, but the sub-tasks for Capture User Files and Settings look different from mine. Mine: Set Local State Location / Set USMT Additional Capture Options / Capture User Files and Settings. Petervanderwoulde.nl: Set User State Location / Set Hardlink Capture Options (which I don't have) / Capture User Files and Settings. Thanks and regards.

The idea of both is the same, only the name is different. If you are doing exactly what's in the technet article you should be fine. When it's not working, then at which point does it fail (look at least into smsts.log and scanstate.log).My Blog: http://www.petervanderwoude.nl/ Follow me on twitter: pvanderwoude

I am confused. I created this task sequence following this MS TechNet article: http://blogs.technet.com/b/configurationmgr/archive/2010/06/30/how-to-use-usmt-4-hardlinking-in-a-configuration-manager-2007-task-sequence.aspx. Step 15 of Method 1: Click on the "Set Local State Location" task. Next to the "Value:" text field, change it from %_SMSTSUserStatePath% to %SystemDrive%\UserState. Thanks and regards.

I created a task sequence to do an in-place upgrade (refresh) of Windows from XP to 7. But when I ran it, the TS didn't preserve anything from XP, instead it wiped the hard drive cleanly, and the computer with the new OS didn't join the domain either. This is the TS summary: Create a New Task Sequence Name: USMT with Hardlinking Test Boot Image: Windows PE Custom 1.00 en-US Install the Windows Operating System Image package: Windows 7 Enterprise SP 1 1.0 en-US Image index: 1 - 1 Partition and format target computer: No Server licensing mode: Do not specify Use random password: No Configure the Network Join domain: MyDomain.org Domain OU: LDAP://OU=Staging,DC=MyDomain,DC=org Account: MyDomain\sccmna Install the ConfigMgr client Package: Microsoft Configuration Manager Client Upgrade 4.0 ALL Installation properties: PATCH="C:\_SMSTaskSequence\OSD\COR00040\i386\hotfix\KB2509007\sccm2007ac-sp2-kb2509007-x86-enu.msp" SMSSLP=CORSCCM01.MyDomain.ORG SMSMP=CORSCCM01.MyDomain.ORG FSP=CORSCCM01.MyDomain.ORG Configure State Migration Capture user settings: Yes USMT package: USMT Save user settings on a State Migration Point: Yes Capture network settings: Yes Capture windows settings: Yes Include Updates in Image Install software updates: All software updates Thanks and regards.

A state migration point is not needed for USMT hardlink. Have you specified /hardlink and /nocompress? http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee344267.aspxNicholas Jones, MCITP | Core Infrastructure Consultant | Sparkhound | https://www.mcpvirtualbusinesscard.com/VBCServer/nicholas.jones/profile

The installation property was copied from another task sequence. Do I need to remove the SMP? This is what's integrated into the task sequence: Set USMT Additional Capture Options OSDMigrateAdditionalCaptureOptions /nocompress /hardlink Set USMT Additional Restore Options OSDMigrateAdditionalRestoreOptions /nocompress /hardlink Thanks and regards.

I have used the task sequences here in the past without problem. He has the xml templates available to download so that you can take a look at and modify your own if you wish. http://www.windows-noob.com/forums/index.php?/topic/1633-sample-xp-to-windows-7-task-sequences/

Well... that's something totally different then you stated in your initial post... There you stated that you created a Task Sequence including a configuration for a SMP... So, let's start over :-) Can you described the steps you configured in your Task Sequence? And where it goes wrong? My Blog: http://www.petervanderwoude.nl/ Follow me on twitter: pvanderwoude

You are missing the path to store the user data. For the basic online hardlink migration, see: http://www.petervanderwoude.nl/post/configmgr-2007-usmt-4-0-and-using-hard-links/ For a an example that can do it all (online, offline and hardlinks), see Windowsnoob, or: http://www.petervanderwoude.nl/post/capture-user-files-and-settings-offline-winpe-or-online-fullos-with-configmgr-2007/My Blog: http://www.petervanderwoude.nl/ Follow me on twitter: pvanderwoude
