Tracking a computer record's progress SCCM 2012 R2 OSD

Hello,

At times I have techs asking questions about the computer record in order to drop an image.

Beyond duplicate records or the basic stuff I don't have a deep dive way to track what happens to the record beyond smsts.log and SMSpxe.log.

What logs can be pursued to gather intel on the problem.

Thanks

You want to track what step of the deployment task sequence the computer is in ?

If so go to the monitoring section --> System Status --> Status Message Queries and look for  (if you know the computer name and not using unknown computer open All Status Messages from a specific system if you are using unkown computer the easy way is to look at All Status MEssages.

This will allow you to see from the console where the task sequence is at during the deployment.

If this was not the question sorry :(

In my case I'm not able to get an assigned  Task Sequence or at times for the computer record to appear and or populate.

I'm not able to get an assigned  Task Sequence: Do you mean you are trying to do a OSD on a computer and he doesn't have any task sequence listed  to him ?

If you are using PXE i would look at the smspxe.log file to see what it`s telling you.

computer record to appear and or populate: Do you means once the deployment is done you don't see the computer in the device section?

Are you adding the computer manually? You using AD discovery? Are you installing the client manually?

We need more information to be able to help you.

If the TS doesn't run on the machine the best way to see why it's on both log you mentionned

  • SMSPXE.log will tell you if the PXE server respond to the request
  • SMSTS.Log will tell you detailed step as of why it's not running

If the TS runs, the best way is using built in reports or with Status Messages as Frederick pointed out.

These systems have an incomplete Computer record so they won't populate as a member of a collection, and there would be no status messages for a task sequence.

If you try to do a Bare Metal Add wouldn't there be server logs to track the process...that is what I'm looking for?

If they have incomplete status in the SCCM console might be because they got discover by some sort of discovery and they don't have a working client so they can`t populate the info.

To be able to deploy a task sequence to them the record need to have either the valid MAC address or the SMSBIOS GUID

If you manually import the computer and use the same name and enter one of the info you will be able to PXE boot it.

Perform a search on the computername. I see no double entries. Do a query on MAC address and see one entry.

Delete the computername and wait a few minutes try again and no joy.

I don't follow.

If you want to be able to deploy the deployment task sequence SCCM need to be aware of the computer (unless you are using the unknown computer collection for deployment)
