Track Changes issues in Word 2013 when using Sharepoint

We have recently moved to Word 2013 using SharePoint - unlike previous versions of Word, ie 2007 and 2010, we have found that if you open a document in word, mark up the changes, close the document and then the same person opens it at a later date that if they try to do anything in track changes it actually tracks over existing tracks - this is something that it shouldn't be doing, at least it didn't in previous versions of Word.

We have come to the conclusion that it may have to do with Sharepoint and versioning. We need to use the versioning function that Sharepoint has for our documentation purposes - and turning that off is not an option.  It is hard to understand what is happening as on previous versions of Word, using Sharepoint, we never encountered this issue.  So what has happened now with Word 2013 and Sharepoint that this is occurring? Any ideas.

As the majority of the work we do is in track changes we need to find a timely solution to this problem.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
