To MP or not to MP that is the question
Hi Everyone, I am currently at a customers site where they have approx. 5000 clients divided over 198 Secondary Sites and of course 1 Central Site. As we all know the Central Site is the only one having a SQL Database. For all these 5000 clients only one MP has been defined (the one hosting the SQL DB). Their bandwidth between the sites ranges between 256kbit up to 2Mbit. They have configured all Secondary Sites with the Management Point role but decided not to check the box (allow clients to communicate with this MP). For that reason I have a tons of error messages from SMS_MANAGEMENT_POINT 5420 and 5436. Would it not be adviceable to either A. remove all those unnecessary MP roles from all those 198 Secondary Sites and save resources on the local servers or B. Try to get some more MP's in where the clients would have to chance to connect to. Right now it seems to me that all 5000 clients are screaming their log files and keep alive packets directly to the CS. I know that the advantage of a Secondary Site is to have a more single connection to the CS once in a while. Your advice is highly appreciated on this matter. I have just done some reading always RTFM eh? What I would like to know still and what I cannot find is when you want to make use of Proxy MP`s at these Secondary Site if you have to tick the box to allow client to communicate to this MP. I guess the answer is yes and I guess that is why this customer is having bandwidth issues because the PMP`S have been installed by the clients do not yet know that they should treat it as such.Kind Regards,Nils

Hi Sherry, thanks that is what I was thinking exactly too.Torsten, This setting is shown as soon as you assign a new site role to a server and you go to the properties of the MP role. You need to enable it in order to let the clients be able to connect to the MP. If you do not enable the check mark (even on the central site the clients normally cannot find the MP. I cannot remember the exact phrase right now. So my feeling is that they just have installed the MP role but it is "sitting in the water" and not doing anything, except taking up memory and besides that did not configure the 198 Secondary sites to be able to write to the SQL Database (hence the access denied errors in event ids on every server with 5420.Do you understand what I mean now?I just looked up the setting using a training video and it is called "Allow devices to use this Management Point".Nils

I just looked up the setting using a training video and it is called "Allow devices to use this Management Point". The MPs would be fully functional if they would be able to access the SQL server. "Allow devices to use this management point" is used to enable the "mobile device management point" (which is needed to manage windows mobile devices etc). Hi Torsten, yes I found this out too, talking to some fellow SCCM Admins at work. Well hey you learn something new every day. The biggest issue is indeed as you have stated that the PMP are not allowed to write to the SQL DB. I will have a chat with the SQL Admins and make sure that we change those rights. My feeling is that this customer never really used PMP because the PMP's were never allowed to the write to the DB in the first place. Let's see if this will tackle their bandwidth problems a little. Thanks for all your help my friend.Nils
