Timeout when Edit In Datasheet with many Person and Group field
I have a customlist with 25 Person and Group field (allow multi selection). When I edit this list in DataSheet. Sharepoint cannot save/update edited item and error occurred: "A timeout occurred while communicating with the server. Changes to your data cannnot be saved" Could you give me any solution? Terrence

Can you confirm that the issue is due to the large number of people columns? can you reduce number of columns for a test, and update us at what number the timeout begins?Basically, some field typestake longer for the database to update, and the datasheet control does have a timeout...Ishai Sagi, MCTS in SharePoint Development (WSS & MOSS) Read my blog! http://www.sharepoint-tips.com

Hi, Ishai Yes, I tested. When you have a list with about 10-15 Persons and Group field allow multi selections. You can Edit In datasheet a View of this list. But when your list become 20 or morethan, Edit In Datasheet will become too slow for updating and timeout error occur as above. Terrence

Agree with Mike - since this isnt caused by your custom code and appears to be a OOB problem with sharepoint lists, you should ask the administrators if there is any way to optimize the performance of sharepoint to increase the time out.I suggest though that opening a support case with Microsoft may be in order here.Ishai Sagi, SharePoint MVP

Hi Guys, I saw that isn't caused by custom code. And I already logged it on SharePoint - General Question and Answers and Discussion at: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepointgeneral/thread/a3588d72-c1e6-4a13-b392-e1b1163b6dbc But nobody reply me, so I have to show it here for supporting because this is my problem and I have to solve. @Ishai: Could you tell me how to "ask the administrators" and "opening a support case with Microsoft"? @Mod: Is that performance of MOSS2k7? Hi all
I seem to have the same problem - a list with about 60 user/group fields.
As soon as I do an edit via datasheet and copy and paste some names in those columns the timeout appear...
Is there a solution other than using pure text fields? Is there a magic parameter to be set on the server?
Any help appreciated!
btw. SharePoint 2007... which brings up the question whether or not SharePoint 2010 would have this problem as well...
