The trial period for this product has expired
I have just installed SharePoint for evalaution using the MSDN license version. When I try to add a Workflow to a list I get the error: The trial period for this product has expired. I am not using a trial version of the product. This happens when I use the workflow templates, Approval or Collect Feedback. It does NOT happen when I use the Collect Signatures or Disposition Approval templates. The templates that do not cause problems have an OK button which creates the workflow. The templates that generate the error have a next button which takes me to a page called CstWrkflIP.aspx. This page gives me the error. Im running SharePoint 2007, version 12.0.0.4518. The server is not a domain controller. In the log file I see that the process w3wp.exe throws the following error:ERROR: Failed to OpenThreadToken, LastError=1008. This error occurs 3 times each time I attempt to create the workflow.Any idea how to fix this? Thanks in advance, Don

Hello,First think I would try is to re-enter your license key at:Central Administration > Operations > Convert License TypeSee if that helps. You can also check your event log for any other messages.RegardsIvan Bondy - MCPD, MCDBA, MCSA, MCTS - Sharepoint consultant

It's in any case a duplicate post (which without your reply I would have deleted) because this identical question was also sent to the General MS *newsgroup*.Perhaps ChambersDon will in future post just in one place ?P.S. I have deleted the duplicate post posted to the Workflow forum here.

I have tried this already. I tired it again and I still get the same error:Your license conversion operation failed. Check the error logs for details.I've looked int he logs and see not entry explain what happend. I've turn verbose logging on but still nothing helpful.

Hi Don, i had read some where regarding these errors which occurs in some cases in sharepoint. i would like to suggest you to check with the version of sharepoint you installed whether its 12.0 and also check with the web application application pool Identity is the same account with which sharepoint has installed on the machine and the same is the system account. Please let me also know if u get the best solution.Regards,Ajith George

Thanks. This fixed my problem. The Application Pool identity was Predefined, Network Service. I changed it to my account which I used to install the software. After this it started working. It is not a good idea to my account because I move from project to project. What permission are required for the account it runs under?Which account do Best Practices suggest that I use? Thanks, Don

Handling an account permissions problem by reporting "the trial period has expired" to the event log sounds like an obvious product bug. As it happens, I've been seeking to find out if Microsoft accepts bug reports against SharePoint anywhere, and have been unable to find any channel at all for bug reports. I know this has generally been a problem with Microsoft products, but I also know that individual Microsoft employees have been making efforts to accept public feedback, and that some product betas have actually had bug reporting allowed.Does anyone know if there is any channel for reporting such SharePoint bugs to Microsoft? I know of at least two more product bugs, which I would like to report?(Almost needless to say, we are not willing to pay $250 for the privilege of reporting Microsoft's own bugs to them -- most Microsoft pages seem to suggest that the reporter first pay $250+ to try to report bugs, which sounds fairly ridiculous compared to most other software companies, which happily accept bug reports, instead of discouraging people by asking for credit cards first...)

Don,I normaly create domainaccount in AD"SharePointService" and assign it to local admin group on the server.Perry,You can join Microsoft connect and report all bug there.https://connect.microsoft.com/directory/regards Ivan Bondy - MCPD, MCDBA, MCSA, MCTS - Sharepoint consultant
