Terminal Servers and AEM
We have a very centralized environment with the majority of users connecting to terminal servers (W2k3) to perform their work from thin clients. We would like to be able to receive reporting data on application crashes (Microsoft and 3rd-party apps) in addition to other information from the Server OS MP for these servers. Can AEM be used for exception monitoring of servers that also have agents installed for hardware monitoring?

Should be possible. Microsoft Corporation

Yes, this is what AEM does. its basically a wizard to turn on a listener and a share on the scom server side and it outputs a group policy template which points to the scom server. You can import the policy in AD and target it at whereever you want it (all computers, or an OU containing just your terminal servers). This will make the builtin error reporting services point to your scom box in stead of microsoft.com. you can change the txt of the popup or disable it. You can turn it on for computer crashes, application crashes, office, media player and so on. All dumps are sent to the central box and you can keep an eye on it. especially for seeing which apps crash the most on your terminal servers and what versions of those apps. In such a setup its a useful tool.Bob Cornelissen - BICTT (My BICTT Blog) - Microsoft Community Contributor 2011 Recipient

Here are more infomation about how to configure the AEM report: CEIP, ODR and the lot. What are they and why should I use them? I used that blog post to configure AEM on my RMS. Configured the GPO and gpresult shows the policy is active on the servers, but when I run accvio.exe, there are application log entries on the terminal server, but there is not change in OpsMgr, or any data in the share.

I downloaded the AEMValidation.zip and ran it on 2 servers. In neither case do I get anything in the OpsMgr console or on the RMS server logs. On one of the servers, the dw.log shows: NEW LOG 10:32:29 10-12-2011 ship dw20.exe 14.0.6015.1000 Generic Mode Multiple times for multiple runs. Is there any way to verify the server is listening correctly? How do I determine whether this issue is client or server-side?

I have followed the troubleshooting guide and unfortunately it was no help. I'm in the same boat as you. The wizard is very clear when you go through it that it's only for Windows Vista and later clients so I wonder if we are out of luck here.

So the question to the community is that has anyone successfully deployed AEM for servers?

I ended up opening a case with PSS for this issue. In the end, in addition to all the other places, we needed to configure in group policy: Computer Configuration - Policies - Admin. Templates - Windows Components - Windows Error Reporting

"Turn off Error Reporting" should be set to "not configured" or "disabled", not to "enabled" as the article suggests.
