Sysprep won't run on a Windows 7 SP1 upgraded image
I have several very large images that I maintain for a large Universty's lab environment and I am running into the problem where sysprep won't run on an upgraded OS. There was always a work around for this problem (delete a hklm\...\upgrade regkey) but unfortunitly, this doesn't seem to work for an upgraded Windows 7 SP1 image. I am hoping someone out there has found a work around for this otherwise I will just leave SP1 out of the image since it is really just a rollup of patches without any real enhancement features that I can't live without like improved reliability when connecting to HDMI audio devices, printing using the XPS Viewer, and restoring previous folders in Windows Explorer after restarting.

are you using config manager to build your images?

I'm not sure why you would ask such a question? It doesn't matter whether you sysprep manually or use the Capture Task Sequence steps, it fails. All I am asking is if anyone knows of a workaround, even if it is un-supportted by Microsoft, to sysprep an image that has been upgraded to SP1....not originally built from an SP1 integrated source files. I'm not looking for any other recommendations on how to deploy an image, like thin vs thick or any other best practices. If you don't know of a workaround, then simply don't reply or just tell me there is no known workaround.

Yes...dozens of times. I use VL media with a KMS which will always adds one more activiation so you can sysprep as many times as you like when using a KMS.

The reason I asked was I needed to understand why you needed to run sysprep by hand, I have never needed to do this. I too work at a University and we have 6000 clients, We have one image that I use on all hardware types intel and AMD, staff and public access, kiosk PCs. So I know your environment and could possibly have helped you!

I thought Sysprep is only for XP/2003 family, and for Vista,7,2008,R2 you should use WAIK and unattended.xml

Maybe provide some more details on any errors you are seeing (event messages, on screen errors etc)? Haven't run into the issue you describe, but having some additional details could help in troubleshooting.

I suggest you remove SP1 from the image. You can deploy SP1 to clients as with Software Distribution feature in Configuration Manager 2007 SP2, R2 and R3.
