Sync Service Manager: Unable to connect to the Synchronization Service
Hi, I have installed the FIM Synchronization Serivce (RC1) on W2K8 R2 64-bit with MS SQL Server 2008 with SP1. As this is a demo machine, I have promoted the machine to a Domain Controller before the installation. During the installation of the FIM Synchronization Service, I have specified the Administrator as the service account. I have also created the required groups in AD as global security groups and have added the Administrator as a member. The Sync Service seems to start without any problems. However, when I start the Snychronization Service application, I get the following error message: "Unable to connect to the Synchronization Service. Some possible reasons are: 1) The service is not startet 2) Your account is not a member of the required security group." Has anybody seen this error as well? I would appreciate any hints that allow me fixing this problem. Best regards Holger

You need to logoff and logon again to make sure that your access token contains the updated group membership.Cheers,MarkusMarkus Vilcinskas, Knowledge Engineer, Microsoft Corporation

Because you installed on a DC, there may have been problems with the creation of the groups. By default the installer want to create the locally but since you are installing on a DC, they would need to be domain groups. Normally for a domain you need to pre-create the groups and then point to them by prefixing the domain before the groups on the security groups page of the installation. Make sure the FIM Sync Admin group exists in the domain. They may have been created automatically when it detected it was on a DC. It's been a long time since I installed on a DC for any reason since I like to demo like my customers run. Eric

Hi, I have found the problem: I had to prefix all the group names with the domain (DOMAIN\FIMxxx) and then it worked. Best regards Holger

Do you mean during the installation of the FIM Sync service or inside AD? Jenne

That would be in the FIm Sync install.. If you don't put the "<Domain>\" in front of the group name, the install will make local groups on the server.Eric

Try pre-creating the groups in the Domain and double check the names.Eric
