Switching web servers
So I have a Content DB on the DB server which will not be moving. All I want to do is take the portal off of one front-end web server and put it on a new front-end web server (the existing web server is having a lot of issues and needs to be rebuilt). What is the best way to accomplish this when there is no access to Central Admin on the existing server (due to numerous server issues, Central Admin no longer works and the Configuration Wizard cannot be run). Thanks!

This is really easy. 1. You have to build new WFE server. Just to make sure that SharePoint version the same lake on old one. 2. Join this server to Web Farm + enable Central Administration on this server (Use Configuration wizard). 3. Remove old WFE (Use Configuration wizard if not working on old server just shutdown and remove server from Central Administration on new WFE). Oleg

Thanks for the quick response. On the new server, it is actually a server which is already hosting some other SharePoint portals (same version) so it is up and running with a working Central Admin. Based on your comments above, I would just need to create the new web app through CA and then reference the Content DB?

If you do not care about server settings you can just migrate content Databases. My approach will work if you need to restore old Web farm as is. But for that you have to build fresh WFE. Oleg
