Subscriptions using external SMTP server
Thanks for the reply Feroz. I am not quite sure how to enable relaying, where would I find settings for the SMTP server? Does this still apply to my situation as the SMTP server is not local (our web domain and email accounts are hosted by a 3rd party)? Thanks Steve

You are welcome Steve. I know how this is done with exchange but not sure how we can do this on a hosted SMTP server. Try checking it with your provider. If i find something interesting i will keep you posted. Thanks FerozMark as Answer if it helps. This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties and confers no rights.

Thanks for your reply Prasanna. I checked the RSreportserver config as suggested in the 'resolution' section and everything seems to be as it should - I am not using any alias's - full addresses only. There has been no 'upgrade' on the system - SQL was installed on a new fresh install of Server 2008. Should I be able to use this feature without an internal SMTP server? Thanks Steve

Hi I recently purchased SQL Server 2008 R2 in hopes of using the report subscriptions feature. When I set up a test subscription, it fails and I get the error 'The e-mail address of one or more recipients is not valid'. I'm getting the impression that this feature only works with an internal SMTP server, ie Exchange. Our emails run from an external SMTP server via our webspace domain provider so I had entered the address 'smtp.emailsrvr.com' into the RS config manager. Is it possible to use subscription with our current setup or would I need to look at hosting the mail internally with Exchange? Regards Steve Flynn

Steve, I am not sure if this helps but try enable relaying on the SMTP Server and check if it resolves the issue. Regards, FerozMark as Answer if it helps. This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties and confers no rights.

Hi Steve, "Is it possible to use subscription with our current setup or would I need to look at hosting the mail internally with Exchange?" Currently, in SQL Server Reporting Services, we can use a remote SMTP server, which is anonymous access authentication or NTLM authentication supported, to deliver reports. If you use an internal SMTP server, because you can change the authentication method, then there is no limit. Could you tell me what authentication methods your 3rd-party E-mail service provider uses? As far as I know, 3rd-party email service providers often do not use anonymous access authentication and NTLM authentication for customers. If so, there are three ways you can try: 1.Use a local SMTP server to deliver reports instead of the external SMTP server 2.Use a local SMTP server to deliver the mails to the external SMTP server 3.Implementing your own delivery extension to use the external SMTP server About the remote SMTP server, you can take the thread as reference: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqlreportingservices/thread/f530488a-7022-4c54-8e1f-e2161d7b9a0d "where would I find settings for the SMTP server?" To configure SSRS for email, you can edit the RSEmailDPConfiguration node in RSReportServer.config file, the file located in the \Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.n\Reporting Services\ReportServer folder by default. You'd better back up the file before you change it. For detail information about this file, please refer to: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms157273.aspx Thanks, Albert Ye

Thanks for your reply Albert. I have found a work around for this since I last posted. My service provider uses basic authentication (username / password) so I used the local smtp server to relay to my 3rd party address. If anyone else is struggling with this, I found the following article very useful... http://www.sql4you.com/?p=132 Thanks again.
