Subscribe Alerts

Hi,

I have a simply query:-

" If i have an excel document say abc.xlsx on the SharePoint which everyone has subscribed to and i replace the document it with a new document with the same name as abc.xlsx, then will the subscription for everyone be affected or not?"

Since technically this will be a new document present on the SharePoint.

Thanks,

Anubhav

Hello Anubhav,

If you are talking about default alert and if you are replacing same file then alert should not be impacted. Basically if vesrioning is enabled  for that library then new version will be created and if versioning is not enabled then SP by default delete old file and replace with new file.

Have you tried it yourself?

Hi Anubhav,

Based on your description, I did a test on my SharePoint 2010 environment with Exchange server.

I created a document library, and set up an alert for all changes, then uploaded a file into the library, I got an email that the file has been added. Then I re-uploaded the same file into the library, and the file will replace the existing same file. Wait for several minutes, I also got an email that the file has been changed.

I created another document library with enabling versioning and tested, I got the same result.

So, if you are using the default alert, when a file overwrites an existings file, the alert also is sent.

Best Regards,

Wendy

A simple answer from a person not versed in the way of Sharepoint would be. Just save a copy of the old document, erase the content of the document everyone is subscribing too and copy over whatever is in the document you are replacing it with.
