Hi Ram, There are ways to archive your SharePoint data (like files or documents already present in document libraries/lists) into External file system. But, exactly why do you want to use SharePoint if you anyway want to store documents on File System. About, custom database I dont think you can store the way SP APIs are managing the content and placing them inside the CONTENT DB once you place your file in a doc lib. It is something similar to you trying to emulate what SharePoint already does for you. Any specific reason for this?BR, PM

Hi Prasanjit, Actually i have huge number of file in one of my document library and this reducing the perfomance. So I am thingking of storing files into file system.

Just open your doc lib in explorer view (at the Views-Section) and you can just copy/paste the documents into a local folder. Or simply connect to the document library via a UNC-path http://blogs.msdn.com/solutions/archive/2006/07/19/671873.aspx regards, Markus

Hi Ram, Even i would like to know what Prasanjit has asked, if you are anyways going to store your documents on a file system why would you need SharePoint in first the place. Anyways if efficiently managing those thousands of files in you document library is your main concern, i would recommend you read the following article http://www.sharepointjoel.com/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?List=0cd1a63d-183c-4fc2-8320-ba5369008acb&ID=241

How is it reducing performance? Just making the pages for that document library load slowly? If so, consider using Views and folders, or a combination of both, to reduce the number of items rendered to the screen at one time. Every document for all the site collections in a content database are stored in one table, so just having a lot of documents alone is not enough to reduce the performance of SharePoint. With SharePoint 2007 you could store content outside of SharePoint with the External Blob Store (EBS) API. In SharePoint 2010 that is augmented (and will be replaced by) Remote Blob Store (RBS). I have a blog post outlining how to install and configure RBS on SharePoint 2010. Keep in mind though, people don't normally go to EBS or RBS for performance issue because they have too many items in a library. They use EBS or RBS to move content to cheaper, and usually slower, drives. In most cases I would guess RBS will slow things down, not speed them up. tk

Thanks Mukesh and Todd. I will try to make use of Views and Folders to reduce the rendering time.

Hi Ram, Why don't you take a look at StorageEdge. I used it to get rid of BLOB mess. They are externalizing it to cheaper storage and all is going fine. No effect on performance and optimization for sure. Its a must try. They also offer free products. Have a look @ http://www.alachisoft.com/storageedge/ebs.html You can also download it from here: http://www.alachisoft.com/download.html#storageedge
