Steady State not printing when locked
I have four new computers I'm adding to my network which has Steady State already installed on the existing computers. I made screenshots of the user setting in the public profile and transferred them manually to a new computer. I am able to print from the admin profile and the user profile when no restrictions are in place but once I lock it down, I am unable to print from the user profile. I've checked and rechecked the restriction settings and they are exactly like those on a computer that prints from the same profile setup. I removed the profile and created another from within SteadyState and get the same results. I'm at a loss. I work in a public library and we must allow printing while maintaining control over the computers. Within SteadyState the profile is unlocked and I use Centurion Technologies Smart Shield for harddrive protection. Please don't tell me Smart Shield is causing the problem because I have 7 exisiting computers that have been running both SteadyState and Smart Shield AND allowing printing for over two years.

Hi Grandview, I suggest you try different restriction level to narrow down the restriction that causes the issue under the current situation. Please also remember to check those restrictions in "Global Computer Settings".Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.

As I wrote above, the settings on the new computers are exactly the same as on the older computers which print with no problem. Are you suggesting that the same setting on both computers could possibly allow printing on one and not the others?

Grand, When you log into the public profile and launch IE and/or Word for example, try to print something, does windows see a printer installed? Eliminating the IE specific restrictions from SS (obviously, you have Prevent Printing unchecked), so, when you disable any restrictions, while logged into the User account, does a printer show up in the control panel? If so, how is the machine connecting to the printer, IP address? Sometimes I find that while setting up a printer in the Admin account, its good practice to log into the User account you intend to lock down and make sure the printer is shown in the Printers folder, and print something before locking it down. I have seen instances where setting up everything in an Admin account, down to creating a User account, either through SS, and/or Windows, and locking that account down, without ever first logging into that account can screw up certain things, programs running, etc. If you can see the printer, print a test page, and all the restrictions are turned off, but when turned on, you can't print anything, something is blocking it. I know you said the restrictions are exactly the same on the earlier configured machines, but double check, you may have missed something, a registry hack maybe? Do you have the "Prevent users from installing Printers checked off?" Try unchecking that setting, log into the account, and print something, see if that works, then go back and enable that setting, log back in again and see if it prints. Otherwise, I don't know what to suggest. HTH, PhilipComplexity is the enemy of Security -- Steve Gibson
