Instead of trying to trigger an alert, use the 'Information management policy settings' link in your list settings to trigger a workflow which will perform the same function as your planned alert

Hi, You can do it in the following ways: 1. Create a timer job that will check on a daily basis if your current date exceeds your expiry date or not and will send you alerts. 2.
