Software updates and computer restarts

Hello everyone,

I'm trying to get a clear understanding of how this works. I'm wanting to deploy software updates to client workstations with the option to suppress restarts because I don't want to computers to restart automatically while users are working. But I also want those computers restarted at a later time when the user is no longer working. I did some research and found the shutdown tool http://blog.coretech.dk/kea/configuration-manager-shutdown-utility/

I also found that the client settings have an option for computer restarts that shows dialogs until a computer is restarted. Would the client settings work for this purpose or do I need the shutdown tool?

Thanks.

It's bad practice and not recommended to install windows updates and not restart when required. There is the potential to cause applications to close and cause data loss.

I wouldn't advise installing updates during normal business hours to avoid the potential for interrupting a users work.

The recommended approach is to use maintenance windows to control when a device can restart and install software. Once a maintenance window is established you can deploy software updates without having to supress restarts as your maintenance window will control this for you and protect the business during business hours.

Is there any other way? I was wanting to save maintenance windows for servers only.

If I choose the option to suppress restart, does that stop all restarts even if the deadline is reached?

You can design your maintenance window for the desktop operating systems to only apply to Software Updates (This option is available on the maintenance window schedule)

By doing so, you have a maintenance window to control software updates without affecting other deployments.

This is the cleaner and more predictable solution.

Yes - Suppress restarts suppresses all restart notifications for that deplo
