Software Updates Notification not Appearing as expected

I have created an ADR for machines to update themselves and the ADR creates the software update group fine and also the deployment. The client machines receive the bubble stating that your IT department needs to make software changes to your machine and you go in and open up the notification box and you see the updates after clicking details. The sofware updates are sitting there awaiting installation as required. If the machine is left then we do not see any notifications presenting themselves reminding the user that the updates need to be installed as I would expect with the client settings set to :

1. deployment deadline greater than 24 hours remind every 12 hours

2. deployment deadline leass than 24 hours remind every 2hours

We are not seeing this behaviour for any client machines and effectively when it hits the deadline it then notifies the user of an impending restart after the forced installation. I do not see the notifications appearing for the settings set in the client settings computer agent policy for reminding the user every 2 hours or every 12 hours?

Appreciate your help

The notifications are in the form of balloon messages from the icon in the notification area of the task bar and are easy to miss or accidentally dismiss. I've also been at least one customer that disabled these at an OS level since the functionality is actually at the OS level.

Jason I would expect there to be some sory of visible notification for users to be honest that is fairly obvious.

Do you need to teak any settings in wsus gpo maybe that could be incorreclty configured that does not show the notifications?

I am baffled as the customer states that a number of amchines do not get any visble notification of every 2 hours or every 12 hours, that a lot of people missing the bubble in my opinion. Is there anything that may have been missed when setting teh ADR , as i have checked all teh settoings and also all the client settings related to client notifications.

As long as the deployment has notifications enabled and you haven't completely disabled notifications in the client settings applied to the clients, then no, there's nothing else to do in ConfigMgr. As mentioned, it is *very* common for the ballon notifications to be missed or accidentally dismissed and there are no other built-in options.

WSUS GPO settings have nothing to do with ConfigMgr or balloon notifications as these notifications are, as mentioned, an OS level feature. The only GPO setting that I know of around balloon notifications is to disable them: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/11442-notifications-enable-disable-message-balloons.html

Some organizations have created their own notification system to address this.

Thanks Jason,

Notifications are enabled and you get the initial notification that "Software changes are required by your IT department"

After that I do not see any balloon tip notifications to keep bugging the client that you need to install sofwtare updates before the deadline even if i set the notifications aggressively in client settings to:

1. deployemnt greater that 24 hours remind user every 12 hours

2. deployment deadline less than 24 hours remind user every 1 hour

3. deployment deadline less than 1 hour remind user every 5 minutes

The state of the machine I am testing is one where i click remind me later and the updates are not installed as i want to replicate a user where they ignore the initial notification and the deadline is impending.

I have even set the registry key to notification message to remain for 5 minutes but still with no joy?

I should expect the a notification every 5 minutes in the last hour before the deadline and when updates install themselves and then to get the restart timer?

do you have Business hours setup ? Business Hours setting affects notification too.
