Software Metering Clarification
Hi All, I've been coming across an error whereby the software metering processor has been discarding reports due to bad start and end times. I've delved into the MUX files and found that in some instances the HistoricalMeterData end time value predates the start time for the "Cisco Systems VPN Client". I figure that this is likely to be as a result of a VPN client adjusting it's time after it has connected with the corporate network. My question is how do I exclude this EXE or folder from the Software Metering Client agent so information about vpngui.exe isn't collected? I found this article http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb632671.aspx about excluding folders from software inventory but would this also affect information collected by the software metering process? Looking forward to your thoughts, Tim

I think this is simply resolved by disabling the software metering rule for VPNGUI.exe, can anyone confirm? My concern is that data will still be collected in the background about the vpngui.exe to allow for this option: "Auto-create disabled metering rules from recent usage inventory data". If the recent usage inventory data is collected by the software metering client agent then wont the erroneous starttime and endtime values for vpngui.exe still cause the report to be discarded? I think I just need to understand where the data that enables the above auto-create... option comes from? Thanks, Tim

Hi Torsten, I read that before posting, all it says is that it creates the auto rules based on "recent usage inventory data held in the Configuration Manager 2007 database". I guess I'm trying to clarify whether this "recent usage inventory data" is collected by the software inventory client agent or by the software metering client agent. If it's the software metering client agent then surely the erroneous starttime and endtime values in the report will still cause the report to be discarded. Regards, Tim

It's talking about 'inventory', not 'metering' => it's SINV. Why don't you just disable that specific rule as you already mentioned: "I think this is simply resolved by disabling the software metering rule for VPNGUI.exe"

I didn't think the software inventory collected recent usage data which is why I was unsure, but thanks!
