Software Distribution Folder
Afer installing SCE on one of my servers, I have found a folder in the root directory entitled Software Distribution and it has about a 1.5gb of data in it. Is this something that is needed. I am really running out of space on my root and 1.5 gb would help me alot. Thanks

Steve, The Software Distribution folder in the Windows directory is a part of AU. Have you run AutomaticUpdates on the server recently? Try installing updates and rebooting. If that does not reduce the size of the directory then it should not harm anything to stop the Automatic Updates servicethen empty the Software Distribution folder and then restart the Automatic Updates service.

Before your rename the folder you must stop the service. Here is how: Start>Run type cmd and press enter type net stop wuauserv and press enter type rename c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution softwaredistribution.oldand press enter type net start wuauserv and press enter type exit and press enter Verify that the new software distribution folder created when you restart the update service is approxiamtely 1.5 MB in size (standard files). Restart the computer and del the folder if you have no issues. For more information please see this blog post for more details on how to redirect the software distribution folder to another drive: http://msmvps.com/blogs/jeffloucks/archive/2010/09/19/redirecting-updates-and-the-software-distribution-folder-using-junction-to-another-hard-drive.aspx
