Hi all Is there a size limit for the .dat backup that can be taken using STSADM -o backup and for the .dat that can be restore using STSADM. Thanks in Advancepv

PV -- There are no hard limits for how large of a backup can be created using STSADM, I've seen site collection backup files over 21 GB in size created successfully. That being said, there are some limits that Microsoft has strongly recommended be followed when doing backups with STSADM in SharePoint 2007, which are: For catastrophic backups, do not attempt to include content databases more than 100 GB in size: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc263427%28office.12%29.aspx For site collection backups, do not attempt with STSADM if your site collection is larger than 15 GB: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc706871%28office.12%29.aspx These recommendations are based on Microsoft's testing and experiences with live production SharePoint 2007 environments. You may be able to be successful in the short term ignoring these recommendations, but backups are something that I expect to be run repeatedly over a long period of time. While it make work a few times for you, MS is indicating that over time its a question of when you will encounter an issue with a backup of a resource over these size limits, not when. As per MS recomendition( i believe) a site collection limit is 20GB and if its more then 20GB then you put it into its own Content DB. In this case i can say stsadm backup limit is 20GB...but you can restore the more then 20GB site but more the size, more the time required. hope this will works thanks -wsi am at SharePoint administrator
