Site Server: ML Required?
Hi, From PUR: You do not need a management license for i) any of your OSEs running instances of the server software on your licensed servers, Does this means that I can install SCCM client on my site server and use all the features to manage it (DCM included), without buying a ML CAL? Thanks.

Hi there, I recently came to almost similar situation and i have found out that if you going install and SCCM agent on server, then u need a ML regards of the server roles. Check this out : http://www.microsoft.com/systemcenter/configurationmanager/en/us/pricing-licensing.aspx harris.

Thanks. But I didn't read anything related to this issue in particular on the links you posted. The PUR and SC licensing whitepaper (http://download.microsoft.com/download/5/9/F/59FCBEEF-DCF7-4333-A00F-175B7DB9BEC4/SC%20licensing%20whitepaper%20final%2011-02-07.pdf) seem to say that no ML is required. "The servers running the Management Server software do not require separate server MLs for the same product. For example, an Operations Manager server would not require a server ML to be monitored by Operations Manager, but would require a Configuration Manager server ML if it is managed by Configuration Manager." Now, I wonder if I can use the "Enterprise" features, or just the standard features. Regards.

I suggest you contact your TAM or licensing specialist for info about licenses. Personally I don't deal with licensing and this is generally considered a technical forum but I will say that I don't think I have ever gotten the same answer twice when I ask the difference in the ML's.John Marcum | http://www.TrueSec.com/en/Training.htm | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jmarcum

John is right, this is a technical forum and I doubt anybody here will know the answer... Licensing questions should always go through your licensing contact at MS as that kind of information changes constantly anyhow. On a side note, this question makes me curious as to the relevance of cost savings vs time wasted. The ML cost is relatively cheap ($30 for a client, and $100 I believe for a server with DCM). So unless there are a dozen or more servers for which you have MP licenses, the cost saved vs the cost consumed in research is now irrelevant.Scott Gill SCCM Consultant
