Site Header Problem
I am trying to figure out how to use headers for Sharepoint web apps. I have created a web app with the default URL of http://shrpt_svr:1605 I want to also reach this site by using the header "test.gracenet.net" So....I entered the header in the header text box when the app was created and placed an A entry in DNS resolving "test" to the IP address of the host server. I can reach the site using http://shrpt_svr:1605 but I get a blank page with "Error" on it when I try to use "test.gracenet.net" What else do I need to do to get the "test....." url to work?

It's recommended to use SharePoint's alternate access mapping settings instead of configuring the host headers directly. Here's how you configure it: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc263208%28office.12%29.aspx http://blog.henryong.com/2007/01/17/alternate-access-mapping-in-sharepoint/ I hope this helps!http://donahoo-development.com

Hi, There are two parts to configure when using Host Headers whether they are autmatically generated when you created the webApp, automatically generated when you extended the webApp, or added manually, host headers and AAM go better together. Add test.gracenet.net to the AAM settings for the WebApplication http://shrpt_svr:1605 if you havent already done so. Also, just to comment one of the primary reasons to use Host Headers is that you will not have to use strange ports like 1605, use port 80 HTTP default instead... If you are attempting to browse the site test.gracenet.net from the same server where you are hosting the WebApp, you will need to disable loopback processing http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896861. When you use the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) or a custom host header to browse a local Web site that is hosted on a computer that is running Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 5.1 or a later version, you may receive an error message that resembles the following: HTTP 401.1 - Unauthorized: Logon Failed Cheers, -Ivan Ivan Sanders My LinkedIn Profile, My Blog, @iasanders.
