Site Control file Issue on Secondary Server
Hey guys, Is there a way to reset the sitecontrol file for a secondary site only, or any other suggestions without doing a complete site reset?? What are the implications if we changed the file version on the Secondary site to match the DB? We have had to rebuild a secondary and now the control file versions are out. SCCM DB has a newer version than the newly rebuilt sec site. cheers

Hi, Did you rebuilt the site using the same site code? I would personally built a new secondary site with a new site code and re-use all the compressed packages with preloadpkgonsite.exe.Kent Agerlund | http://scug.dk/members/Agerlund/default.aspx | The Danish community for System Center products

Hi, Yes we did rebuild the sec site. I could look at rebuilding with a new site, but that would break the naming convention so would prefer not to. What are the implications if we changed the file version on the Secondary site ctrl file to match the DB? cheers

Thanks for the info, I had already seen that link :) Changing the ctrl file is Supported, but only if supervised by MS , go figure, guess they don't trust anyone ;)

I always recommend that site code have not meaning. i.e. Don't use airport codes, not use anything that can't be changed.http://www.enhansoft.com/

I agree with Garth, do not get married to site codes because they do change. I'm not sure if preinst.exe /synparent and /syncchild will fix the site codes or not but it may be worth a try. I do know I had this issue once and called CSS and they walked me through manually editing the site control files. I would call them if I were you. If you edit them on your own it's unsupported but CSS can do it and that's fine. John Marcum | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jmarcum |

AGree about site codes, just keeps it uniform for the support teams... I don't care either way :) You don't use Preinst / syncxxx for Secondary sites. Site codes is not the issue so don't need to worry about that, just sitecntrl version. If I need tro rebuild the server and change the site code , may as well look at changing the ctrl file ver first :)

You don't use Preinst / syncxxx for Secondary sites. Site codes is not the issue so don't need to worry about that, just sitecntrl version. Oh yea, I forgot that was primary sites only. "Because secondary sites have no site database on which the Hierarchy Maintenance tool can operate, stop and restart the SMS Executive service instead of using the /syncparent command for a secondary site. This forces the current site control image for the secondary site to be forwarded to the parent site." I believe /syncchild does work on secondary sites however. "This command, which you run from the parent site, synchronizes a child site with its parent site. This command simulates a child site attachment so that all the components at the current site are triggered by a site attachment notification for the specified child site, thereby updating the child site." I'd just call CSS and have them tell me what to edit in the site control file manually. I had to do a bunch of them once, there's nothing to it but still don't do it without calling them because if you break something it's totally unsupported.
