Single content list missing content and controls
One of our content lists is missing the controls and the content. The user tried to edit the list and something she did made the list disappear. The list heading it there so it's not like it was deleted. And the view all site content shows that it wasn't been edited in two weeks. What should I start by trying?

Hello Ben, Need some more info to narrow it down, remember more info is better then less: 1. What version of SharePoint? 2. Have you tried viewing the list with your farm account? Eliminate the possibility of permissions. 3. Are you viewing the list thru a webpart? 4. What kind of editing was your user trying? Where they using SPD? Hope this helps, please post back. If I understand you right, then I've seen this before. The page still displays: http://yourserver/sites/yoursite/Lists/yourlist/AllItems.aspx The list title is there "Yourlist", but the rest of the page is blank. Odds are the user deleted the web part used to display the list. They probably did this: Site Actions, Edit Page, either click the "X" or click the web part's dropdown and click Delete If they clicked the "X" then you are in luck... Diplay the problem page Click Site Actions, Edit Page Click Add a Web Part and at the bottom of the popup click "Advanced web part gallery and options" Look for "Closed Web Parts" in the panel on the right and if there is a number, usually (1), if so, keep going... Click "Closed Web Parts" and the drag the yellow bar with your list's name back on to the page Click Exit Edit Mode (just under Site Actions) Mike Smith TechTrainingNotes.blogspot.com

Continued... If the user really deleted the web part for the page, i.e. "Closed Web Parts" = 0 then here's a way that often works... Background: When you go to the list by clicking the URL in Quick Launch you get the blank page (has normal tabs, quick launch, list title etc, but not list and controls are not displayed. At the top of Quick Launch click View All Site Content Click the list, if you are lucky then it will take you to the Settings page for the list. If so then we have a URL with the list ID (GUID). Edit the URL and change "ListEdit.aspx" to "ViewType.aspx" and press Enter. This should then take you to the View edit page where you can create a new (replacement) view. Click "Standard View" Enter "AllItems" (or whatever you like) Mark it as the Default View Pick the columns you want to display (make sure one is include "(linked to document with edit menu)") Click OK and you should have the page back. (but it may be named AllItems1.aspx as the old and broken AllItem.aspx is still there somewhere - you may want to go into SharePoint Designer to delete the old page and rename the new page to AllItems.aspx) Your Quick Launch, and maybe other links will still point to the old page, so you can either update them or do the SharePoint Designer delete and rename listed in the step above. Let us know if either of these worked for you. Mike Smith TechTrainingNotes.blogspot.com

1. We are running WSS 12.0.0.6421 2. I signed in with the system account and receive the same problem. 3. We are not viewing the list through a webpart. 4. The user said she was going to use Edit in Datasheet. But nothing ever came up. The page just went blank.
