Simple PING
Hello,
I was running the http://contoso.se/blog/?p=189 script to create events but for the two machines I was trying to ping I do not get any return in the logs so far.
Why not using the Ping Status in the Availability on the Windows Computers?
Because there is no period or settings to lknow how often it is pinged?
it seems the Ping Status works only on Health Watcher status change to critical?
http://blogs.technet.com/b/jonathanalmquist/archive/2010/01/11/health-service-heartbeat-failure-diagnostics-and-recoveries.aspx
Also I shutdown one of the test servers:
Pinging OPMGRACS1.ad.medctr.ucla.edu [10.32.188.27] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 10.32.188.25: Destination host unreachable.
Reply from 10.32.188.25: Destination host unreachable.
Reply from 10.32.188.25: Destination host unreachable.
Reply from 10.32.188.25: Destination host unreachable.
Ping statistics for 10.32.188.27:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
but the Ping Status remains Healthy as all items 30 minutes after the shutdown,... something is wrong?
I tried a "Reset Health" and a "Recalculate Health" everything is healthy the server is still down !!!!
now 5 hours later the server is showing still healthy, not pingable in a command prompt or from the SCOM Console... but all green in the console...!!!
I shutdown a second server it took 30 minutes ti get the ping status down!!!
Thanks,
Dom

Dom, you will probably not get high value from a ping test on a computer that already has an agent installed. The agent heartbeat alerts you of server outages longer than three minutes.
If you really need a ping test, see the free ping management packs from

Hello Pete,
Thanks for the links I will review them.
Our problems or ideas are:
- Replacing the current IP Monitor ( which is doing a simple Ping)
- Bypassing the Agent which is are hanging or failing to report a lot of times for various reasons without a pattern so far...

You could possibly leverage the PingStatus write action that the computer down recovery uses in your own rule or monitor. This is more advanced authoring, and there are some tricky considerations if you plan to implement for all agents on a regular
schedule, but it can be done.HTH, Jonathan Almquist - MSFT

Hello,
I am using the Ping from SystemCenterCentral, I am building the list of servers from an extraction of the OperationsManager database so I could have both the Ping Watcher independent from the Health Service Watcher and the I would like to ping so it
works ... cross fingers
the Node Watcher are the management servers not sure it is a good idea but it is quick for now they the SCOM Agent and they are Proxy...
But it seems i need to add any new machine to the Ping List and remove any decomissionned machines from the ping list manuallly, isn't it?
Thanks,
Dom

Hello,
Any limitations in the number of machines to be in the Ping List? I see my long list in the registry.
I am using an MS (RMS even (:) as the Node Watcher.
Thanks,
Dom

It seems to be the ";" at the end of the registry key not sure why but the tests done make a failure each time the registry ends by :
