Sharepoint version level
I will update our MOSS 2007 sharepoint server to SP2 this weekend. The initial installation of our server was installed by previous admin who left.I tried to figure out the service pack level of the production server, I tried two ways, but get different result: 1. I went to control panel- I see there is a Microsoft office sharepoint server 2007, then I click the link- click here for support information. I see the version is 12.0.4518.1016. If I follow this article below - I know it's RTM version. http://www.sharepointdesignerstepbystep.com/Blog/Articles/How%20To%20find%20the%20SharePoint%20version.aspx 2. But if I check at the central admin site, on the operation -servers in farm page, the version is 12.0.0.6219. also by above article , it show the SP1. Why are they different?

This is a tricky subject, because there are so many different version numbers listed in so many different places for a given installation of SharePoint. For me, the best place to easily look at version information is in the Servers page you reference above in the Central Admin site, because it lists a version for the farm (which is what version your configuration database is at) as well as a version for each SharePoint server in your farm (which you need to also watch so you can make sure that all servers are patched to the correct level and are in line with the version of your farm). The version information in the Control Panel probably checks a specific DLL within SharePoint's code base to display that number. The problem I have with this value is that it appears that DLL files within SharePoint get their versions revised independently, so some may not get updated even though an update has been applied to the farm in the whole. For example, our internal SharePoint portal is showing a patch level in the Control Panel of 12.0.6425.1000, which maps to SharePoint's SP2 release, but the farm version in Central Admin is showing as 12.0.0.6510, which is the June 2009 Cumulative Update (its Post-SP2). A couple of things: If you see a version where the third set of digits is 0, that's probably going to map to a farm version. If the third set of digits is something like 4518 like you're seeing above, its a version number for a specific DLL The version numbers shown in Central Admin are usually the best indicator of what version your environment is at, because the DLL versions seem to get changed independently, which makes it really tough to properly track your version status. I know its painful, but it really pays to closely read the documentation available for each patch before you apply it to your SharePoint environment, the reason being that these writeups include all the nitty gritty information about what version each DLL or other important file in SharePoint should be at after you apply the patch. Here's the KB article for the WSS SP2 update, for example: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/970359 As a final unsolicited piece of advice, you should try to get your farm patched up to Service Pack 2 in the near future. Its got a lot of important updates (both functional and security), and is required if you're going to upgrade the farm to SharePoint 2010 once its available. Plus, you'll be in a supported status for a longer period of time after you upgrade (currently MS requires that you're at SP1 at a minimum for them to work w/ you on a support call, but its window is soon coming to an end, I'm hearing April-ish and you'll need to apply SP2 after that point - http://blogs.technet.com/stefan_gossner/archive/2010/01/07/is-your-sharepoint-2007-farm-already-on-service-pack-2-if-not-read-this.aspx ).
