Sharepoint for one end user/client only
SharePoint is a server-based application. Client PCs to a SharePoint system use the Client PC's browser (and possibly the Client PC's Office applications) to access the SharePoint system. Provided your client is not required to do development using Visual Studio he does not need to install SharePoint Server on his PC. As for the user license (CAL). Yes, he will need one (Standard) or possibly two (Standard + Enterprise) depending on the version of MOSS 2007 that is in use (Standard or Enterprise - which needs both licenses!), however these are not installed on the Client PC, they just need to be bought (typically by the owner of the SharePoint system) and assigned only to that particular user. (I.e. they can not be shared or otherwise used concurrently). That covers it except for the comment that these rules are the same for all the server versions of SharePoint. I referred above to MOSS 2007 as that is the default server version for this pre-2010 forum. Oh yes, and he doesn't need to install anything but using a fairly recent IE6/7/8 version of IE as the browser would be sensible as would - if possible - the version of Office that matches the SharePoint in use (i.e. Office 2007 for MOSS 2007) although this is not compulsary (but it is useful).SP 2010 "FAQ" (mainly useful links): http://wssv4faq.mindsharp.com/default.aspx WSS3/MOSS FAQ (FAQ and Links) http://wssv3faq.mindsharp.com/default.aspx Both also have links to extensive book lists and to (free) on-line chapters

I have a individual who will be working on a project with a large enterprise that uses Sharepoint for communications, documentation, etc. Does this individual need to install Sharepoint Server on their own client PC, or just a user license? Please point to what this person needs to install and configure in order to link up with the enterprise that uses Sharepoint server. Many thanks!
