Sharepoint charts options
Hi I am looking for charting options from a sharepoint issue tracker list to display in the gantt chart format. I do not want to use the Gantt chart view that is provided for the list as it does not scale very well. The options that I can think of are : 1. Create chart in excel and use excel web services 2. Use a 3 party charting soltuin preferably a freeware 3. Use Dataview webpart. Any suggestions would be deeply appreciated.

All three are good options. If you have Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007 Enterprise, I would use Excel services. Why pay for the feature and not use it? If you are really good with Data View Web Parts you can create some pretty amazing solutions, so that is a nice option as well. Third party products are nice if you will need to recreate the solution across your environment, and the price tags are usually pretty reasonable. Just make sure you go with a trusted vendor. In the end, you need to pick the option that works best for you.Chris Caravajal MCTS SharePoint Help

Not sure how you would create a Gantt chart with Excel services? If scale is the problem then Christophe has done so great work customizing the OOTB gantt chart with things like color coding and scale sliders using JavaScript - You could look into something like Tuens gantt chart web part or this Silverlight one but I think both are quiet restrictive on scales so it wouldn't take you very long to rack up a few weeks development costs.... And there are of course some 3rd party web parts that do this such as (blatant plug) my own companies Planner web part

There are more options you can choose from. I have described in my blog here:
