Sharepoint Database Migration
We are planning to move our SharePoint back-end SQL Server Database to a different server. However, the new server will be renamed to have the same server name and IP address as the existing server and the existing server will be renamed and re-IP'ed (if that's a word). Asides from taking the front end SaherPoint services off-line, moving the databases, renaming the servers, and bring the front-edn servers back online, are there any other items that we need to look out for. Do we need to do anything special with the configuration database. The plan is to seed the new server with a full backup earlier in the day and then top off with a Difrerential once the connectivity to the DB is cut off from end-users. The front-end server (web Server) will not be changed. Looking for some advise from anyone who has done this type of migration before. Share point version WSS 3 The old server is Windows Server 2003 (32 bit), SQL 2005 (32 bit) The New server is Windows Server 2008 (64 bit), SQL Server 2005 (64 bit)

Hi Derald A Smith, based on your description, you will migrate to new server(win 2008 64X,sql 2005 64X) with the same name and the same IP, so you need to perform the following steps:- Stop the farm. Detach the databases. Shut down the old database server. Prepare the new database server that has the same name as the old one. Reattach the databases on the new server. Restart the server that is running Central Administration to apply the changes and ensure that the services, Web sites, and application pools that are associated with Office SharePoint Server 2007 are started for more details steps refer to http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc512725.aspx#Section2 Best Regrads, Ahmed Madany
