With that said.  I made a workflow and got approvals working.  I made another workflow and now approvals don't work.  WHY WHY WHY!!!!!!!

I'm ranting but I'm trying to leap through fiery flaming tunnels of bull to get even the simplest of things to work. 

Why cant I set the workflow status!!!!! WHY!!!!!!

Trying desperately to use 2013 Workflows. 

It's driving me nuts.  I think I understand, then everything starts failing.  Then I feel like I don't know anything.  Start over.  Spinning wheels......

I could go 2010 but I feel so defeated.  I feel cheated out of a product that was paid for that doesn't work.

Instructions from Microsoft on what should works is bull.  A lie.  A cheat.  A scandal. :)

2013 workflows are difficult to troubleshoot. Can you post a screenshot of your designer?

Have you checked the Event Viewer? Workflow manager registers its own node by the name of Microsoft-Workflow under the first level node "Applications and Services logs". See if you can find anything in the log.

I'll try. Right now I'm trying to see if the User Profile Service is down. AGAIN!.

It wasn't that.  It's the Workflows.  They keep getting messed up all by themselves.

I had a variable set to Current Item:MyField.  After I closed the Workflow and Opened back up it was empty Current Item: .....

Why is SP 2013 hate me!
