Sharepoint & SSRS
Hi,I'm considering adding Sharepoint to one of my SSRS report servers, but I have some questions:I should note that the only reason I'm doing this is to use the 'Reports Library' menu to give my users a new frsh looking Alternative to the 'Report Manager' meny they are used to seeing. My understanding is that I could also customize the Sharepoint 'Reports Library' page itself. Where I know I can't customize the 'Report manager' menu.1) How difficult is it to install Sharepoint over/on my existing SQL08 installation? I would be using Sharepoint 2007 (unless I should use version 2010)2) Am I correct that I can use this Sharepoint 'Reports Library' as a new menu to my existing Reports?3) To I need to use 'Sharepoint integration mode'?4) What advantages to I gain by having a Sharepoint Server? Thanks in advance...qeqw

See my comments below:1) How difficult is it to install Sharepoint over/on my existing SQL08 installation? I would be using Sharepoint 2007 (unless I should use version 2010)Note that if you install SharePoint on the same machine as SSRS, the machine will need lots of processing power. It is recommended that you install SharePoint on a seperate box.2) Am I correct that I can use this Sharepoint 'Reports Library' as a new menu to my existing Reports? No, Sharepoint Report Library is part of SSRS.3) To I need to use 'Sharepoint integration mode'?4) What advantages to I gain by having a Sharepoint Server?Customization, Security management through SharePoint, Single portal for reports and documents are some of the advantages.-Andy

Thanks for answering Andy.I'm not sure I understand your answer to # 2.I can use the 'Sharepoint Report Library' menu without having to create/access a Sharepoint server?qeqw

Consider that if you have an existing SSRS "native mode" installation (the default), you won't be able to "migrate" the installation over to SharePoint. The SSRS catalog is reconfigured for SP so you won't be able to take your existing reports, users, roles, subscriptions, folders, rights or anything else from a native catalog. The development projects are also configured differently. Each of the paths in the project properties must be prepended with the hard-coded SharePoint server URL. We have seen performance differences as well as SharePoint keeps its own copy of the reports in addition to the cataloged version and these must be kept in sync. In addition there are many (many) more configuration options so adminstration is far more difficult and really requires a well-trained person to manage the site. Microsoft is aware of the conversion issue and has yet to provide a migration wizard to convert the catalog. Once you switch to SharePoint integrated mode, ReportManager is disabled (and cannot be used to manage the catalog). You'll need to re-learn how to admin the RS catalog and re-train users how to run the reports. For example while the report launching interface is customizable, you still can't change how parameters are handled--which is different than how they're managed in native mode. hth__________________________________________________________________ William Vaughn Mentor, Consultant, Trainer, MVP http://betav.com http://betav.com/blog/billva http://www.hitchhikerguides.net Hitchhikers Guide to Visual Studio and SQL Server (7th Edition) Please click the Mark as Answer button if a post solves your problem!
