SharePoint requires re-authentication accessing documents from Office
Hello, I am trying to research if there is a way to prevent re-authentication requests when opening office documents from SharePoint? If I open a word document from a document library, I will get prompted each time I re-open it. Is there anything we can do to change this behavior? Our SharePoint site is hosted externally by a hosting company. Thank you,-Freddy

Hi there Freddy, You'll need to adjust your Internet Explorer Security Settings. Your SharePoint site(s) must be added to either the Local Intranet zone or to the Trusted Sites zone on the client PC in IE. There are a number of articles discussing how to do this, a good one is here: http://www.paulliebrand.com/2008/04/02/sharepoint-consistently-prompting-for-user-credentials/ Hope this helps Geoff

I ran into the same issue with one of my customer few days back, but unfortunately this issue is by design. As you said, your Sharepoint site is hosted by another company so Sharepoint and your machine accessing the site are not in the same forest and hence do not trust. When you open the open the office documents, the office application open up first on the client machine and try to fetch data from the server, but then ask for authentication. Browser has cookie based authenticaion which office applications doesnt understand. Please check the article below and Scenario 2 defines the behavior. http://www.asheville-computer-repair.com/index.php/2009/07/29/log-in-already/ I tried the option as mentioned in the article posted by GEOFF above (Scenario 2 : Users are not part of the domain but have a valid user name and password) but unfortunately it did not help. I LOVE MS..... Thanks and Regards, Kshitiz (Posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.)

I have Windows 7 and Office 2010 RC installed on the client, the first time I visit a SharePoint site on window domain other than my current login domain, IE will prompt for user name and password. I inputted the user credential and checked the "remember my credential" checkbox. Next time when I open IE to visit the same site, it won't prompt for credential again. And opening Office documents for the site also works without login prompt. I can find in Windows Control panel -> credential manager that the user credential for the SharePoint site was saved. In my test environment, I have Windows 2008 Server R2 and Office 2007 SP2. The "remember my credential" checkbox seems not work at all even if I put the SharePoint site into the trusted site IE security zone. I was always prompt for login when I open that site in IE. However, I can open office document from the site even if I canceled the login prompt. Initially, I thought it maybe something wrong with the Office version. At last, I found that everything works as expected if I turn off the IE Enhanced Security Configuration. For detail, please take a look at what follows: http://www.neowin.net/news/main/09/03/07/windows-7-exploring-credential-manager-and-windows-vault http://4sysops.com/archives/how-to-disable-internet-explorer-enhanced-security-configuration-ie-esc-in-windows-server-2008/

HI All i had this problem from long time . finally we solved and the problem was on Host header configuration during create web application, you shouldn't PUT THE FQDN never that was the main problem Ex. Sharepoint.contoso.local with prompt for Authentication or re-authenticate Ex2.Sharepoint only and you creat Canme for you dns point to the IP address that will work to change the Host Header or Site URL after creation follow this : to make it simple, please follow the following steps to configure AAM (alternate access mapping) On the Alternate Access Mappings page, click Edit Public URLs . If the mapping collection that you want to modify is not specified, then choose one. In the Alternate Access Mapping Collection section, click Change alternate access mapping collection on the Alternate Access Mapping Collection menu. On the Select an Alternate Access Mapping Collection page, click a mapping collection. In the Public URLs section, you may add new URLs or edit existing URLs in any of the following text boxes: Default, Intranet, or you can change the Default from http:// Sharepoint.contoso.local to http://Sharepoint Click Save . Now you’ll have to switch over to your DNS server. Within the DNS Management Console and Under Forward Lookup Zones: Add a new Primary Zone with your new domain name. Add a new Host (A) to the records for http://Sharepoint and point the IP Address to the sharepoint server DON'T Ever Make any modifications from IIS make all from Central Administration Cheers,
