SharePoint Services Search Refresh job taking all system resources
SharePoint 2007 WSS 12.0.0.6608 The timer job successfully runs once an hour, but when it does, it takes the w3wp process from 600MB to 7.3GB memory utilitization for about 5-7 minutes. At the end, the memory used drops back down first to about 5GB then stays at around 3GB used. The CPU also spikes during this time and w3wp becomes unresponsive to any client requests. It began last week after defragging the drive which contains the search result .ci files. Any suggestions?

Hello, What is the server role? Also do you see any errors or warnings in event log or sharepoint logs? After defrag, it is usually advised to reboot the machine. Properly putting server in maintenance and then reboot should work. Hope this helps,Regards, Rohan --Please mark as "Answer" if the post resolve your issue--

The server is the WFE, running WinServer2003. The server has been rebooted since the defrag happened, mainly because it became unresponsive. That was approx 1 day after the defrag. There are no errors or warnings in either the event or ULS during the 5-7 minutes when SharePoint Services Search Refresh is running and w3wp.exe spikes the system.

I take back about the ULS, there are some High and Monitorable events. Monitorable: "<Exception><HR>0x800700ce</HR><eip>0000000060035A67</eip><module>d:\office\source\search\commonpkmutild\lmstr.cxx</module><line>340</line></Exception>" [This seems to be a case of the file-name or URL being too long.] "idxpi cbid 171405376 docid 1919948 Occ 93177 ran out of room - File:d:\office\source\search\ytrip\search\tripolipluin\tripmain.cxx Line:3701" And quite a lot of "List item query elapsed time: 3753 miliseconds, additional data 9if available): Query ..." matched with "Exception processing Change Microsoft.SharePoint.SPChangeItem Token 1;0;b92a2b51... Excepton Specified method is not supported"

We rebooted the server again overnight. When I came in the w3wp process was around 500MB memory usage. I started the Search Refresh process. Within 10 minutes, it was over 6GB memory usage. When it was done, total memory usage was approx 3GB. Does the Search Refresh process need to run? The description is "self healing", which sounds like fuzzy magic.
