SharePoint Permission Issue
My company has a SharePoint (MOSS) environment that has multiple SharePoint group permissions on a site, we have a subsite that does not inherit from the parent; a number of lists on the site also with broken inheritances. These permissions mysteriously disappeared and to the best of our knowledge no one was tampering with the permissions. Historically we have done item level permissions, but some time ago we went over to list level permissions, and these permissions have vanished. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, Someone might have tampered the permissions. Please enable the Auditing in the site collection level, so that next time this happens, you can check the logs and find out who changed the permissions Thanks & Regards Posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

It might be that you ran into a behavior specific to SharePoint which is different from permissions in other hierarchical systems like the file system. Lets assume the following Hierarchy: Site A - Subsite AA -- SubSubSite AAA --- List AAAL Now lets assume that permissions are broken on all levels. Means AA has indiviual permissions, AAA has individual permissions and AAAL has individual permissions. A problem can occur as soon as someone reestablishs the permission inheritance of Subsite AA to inherit from Site A. As soon as this is done the permission inheritance further down the tree are also reestablished. That means a single change of permission inheritance near the root of the site collection will remove all broken inheritances for all subsites all lists and all list items. This has to be taken into account before recreating the permission inheritance within a site collection. Hope this helps.
